Marketing Suggestions -
9th August 2008
I have zero experience on managing a forum. But I would like to provide a couple of suggestions for marketing on the web. (A form of direct marketing)
(0) Getting noticed in Search Engine, Good Address.
I think this part is ok. This forum do have visibility in Google. And the domain name is memorable, easy to spell.
(1) Know our Marketing Objective
Not just to increase traffic. But to have members posting actively and interacting with others.
(2) No News is Bad News: Using Publicity to your Advantage
A marketer need to design hooks to make marketing message appealing. And if you can hold the attention of journalist, you can hook anybody else. Even if you fail, you get exposure and an impression.
Don't keep repeating yourself in your email, because the third time someone see the same block of text, they get irritated. Use hooks. Promise some benefits. Hooks give a person new information, relevant to their activities or interests. It captures attention, often by surprising audience with something they hadn't expect.
(3) Generating Great Content
You can't do this alone. Get a few moderators. Hire a few friends as posters. And a few others to do PR for you. (Word of mouth is 10 times more effective than an advertising messages.)
Why is it so important? It gives prospective and current members good reason to come to the forum. And unless you give them a good reason, they don't come and you don't win their stay. Thus, valuable and appealing content = increasing traffic on site. Use google analytics to check the length of time a visitor spend here.
(4) Keeping your Frequent Visitors
The best thing that can happen to the forum, is to have visitors come often and use it as a regular resource. To encourage people to become frequent visitors, vary the content from time to time. Offer a weekly tip or put up a discussion each month. Put up a quote of the day can help too. Ideas like these avoid boredom and reward frequent visitors with fresh content. Make things more exciting by promising some improvements.
(5) Linking Up to Relevant Sites
Offers a links page as a service to members. Cue up good links to useful source of information. Example: E-service, CMS, E-mail of various schools. This simple service for your target vistors can earns you their regular traffic, and give people a reason to visit the site.
(6) Putting your Web Address Everywhere
Most marketers overlook this no-brainer: make sure you use your own communications to promote. Every e-mail that was send out, should have an attractive, clickable logo linking to the forum, as well as an address for feedback and suggestions. Make it easy for people to find the site.
(7) Don't stop marketing.
Practice makes perfect, if you make sure to keep a record of what you do and track the response. ^^
